Would I be a good candidate for lap band?

Mommy of 2 little girls<3 asked:

I am 5′7 218 pounds. A BMI of roughly 34. I have tried numerous diets/lifestyle changes. I eat healthy, I have lost 15 pounds over the last several months, but can no longer work out (run-jog-walk) due to a bad right knee. I am desperate to lose weight. Lap Band an option for me? What are the risks? Thank you.

What is Lap Band Surgery?

Lap-Band surgery includes using an adjustable gastric band that is attached around the top part of the stomach using the surgical technique called laparoscopic. The Lap-Band is a belt-like instrument made from silicone that has a port on the other end. By wrapping it around the top of the stomach, it has the ability to control one’s hunger and achieve a feeling of fullness or satiety. In time, one should feel full sooner even if they eat much lesser than they did before the Lap-Band surgery.

So how is the Lap-Band surgery done? Your surgeon will make a series of small incisions on your torso in which the instrument called laparoscope is inserted. The laparoscope has a small camera and some surgical tools attached to aid the surgeon in properly visualizing and placing the Lap-Band device. The silicone Lap-Band is then placed around the top of your stomach like a belt and secured in place with stitches. The other end of the Lap-Band has a port which is placed underneath the skin on the top part of the abdomen. This port enables the device to be inflated over time to speed up your weight loss process. The procedure only lasts about an hour. Overnight staying in the hospital may or may not be required, depending on your condition.

You may be wondering how inflating the Lap-Band accelerates your weight loss. Your surgeon will actually inject saline into the port which will result in the inflating of the band. This makes the passage to the lower part of the stomach smaller which will further restrict the intake of food. If it is too tight, allowing too little or no food entering the digestive system, your doctor can easily retract some of the fluid in his office.

So are you a good candidate for the Lap-Band procedure? If your body mass index or BMI is between 35 and 39, it is required that you must also have interrelated severe medical problems with your weight problem, otherwise known as co-morbid conditions in order to be a good candidate for the Lap-band surgery. These medical problems or conditions commonly associated with morbid obesity include diabetes, hypertension, heart ailments, or high cholesterol. If your BMI is equal to or greater than forty, then it is not required that you have other medical problems associated with morbid obesity in order to qualify for the Lap-Band surgery.

Cost of Lap Band Surgery

Lap band surgery provides innumerous benefits to any patients undergoing the surgery; therefore, it is not surprising that its costs are also on the higher side. The cost of lap band surgery depends largely on whether you plan to have it done in the United States or you are planning to travel to another country like Mexico to get it done.

While determining the cost of the surgery, you must consider all the other associated costs. These costs include the lab cost, your surgeon’s fees, the hospital expenses and medicine costs. After surgery, also you have to follow up tests, doctor visits and to other food or nutritional counseling.

Though the cost of lap band surgery in USA has been steadily going down over the past few years, still it comes in between $15000 to $25000. It would be difficult to estimate all the costs you will have prior to surgery. Complications may occur following surgery that would add the cost up too. If you have health insurance coverage, this may be less of a concern. The cost also varies from state to state and from surgeon to surgeon.

Cost of lap band surgery comes in between $6000 to $10000 in Mexico. Adding other additional costs such as-airfare, car rental, hotel stays etc. to it also, you can save up to 40 to 50% of your cost compared to U.S. But surgery outside the U.S. will probably not be covered by your health insurance company.

Therefore, if you were covered by the health insurance policy, then it would be better and safer to have your surgery done in United States. Again, if any medical complication arises, you would be better taken care of legally. However, if you are not covered by your insurance policy, then it is better to weigh all the costs and other additional costs of surgery of other countries compared to USA.

The Laparoscopic adjustable bending procedure is performed under anesthesia in a hospital operating room. During surgery, three to five one inch to two-inch incisions are made in the upper abdomen. Normally, this procedure takes about one hour to perform, therefore maximum one day hospitalization.

Many surgeons allow patients to return home the same day, but other surgeons require patients to stay overnight and release their patients after 24 hours of post surgery. Although most Lap-band patients feel quite normal after two to three weeks, full recovery takes minimum 6 weeks.

Lap band surgery is a fairly expensive procedure, but your health is certainly more valuable than money. Therefore, it is important to discuss the cost of Lap band surgery with your bariatric surgeon before deciding on a weight-loss procedure. The quality of operation and safety does matter the most while doing lap band surgery.
