Lap band surgery is an adjustable gastric band type of weight-loss procedure. A prosthetic band is placed around the upper part of the stomach, which creates a small pouch that limits the amount of food the patient eats. If a lap band surgeon approves you for lap band surgery after an extensive consultation, you’ll be required to undergo pre-op exams and lab tests before you’re medically cleared for surgery. There are approximately seven to eight types of adjustable gastric bands on the market today.

If a person has a dependency on alcohol or drugs, then they won’t be eligible for adjustable band surgery. And in general, gastric banding, including the Lap Band procedure and weight loss system is indicated for people for whom the Body Mass Index is above 40 or are 100 pounds (45 kg) or more over their estimated ideal weight (according to the 1983 Metropolitan Life Insurance Tables) or between 30 and 40 with co-morbidities (high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, and arthritis), which may improve with weight loss. In order to be considered one must have total comprehension of the risks and the benefits of the gastric band procedure and a willingness to comply with the substantial lifelong dietary restrictions that are required for long term success.

Those people who are eligible are between ages 18 and 55 years, although there are doctors who will work outside these ages, some may be as young as 12. The lap band surgery is usually not performed if one has an untreated glandular disease like hypothyroidism, where other measures may bring about a resolution.

How it works: the adjustable gastric band or Lap Band is an inflatable silicone prosthetic device which is placed around the top portion of the stomach using keyhole laparoscopic surgery. The gastric band is inflated and adjusted by way of a small access port placed just beneath the skin subcutaneously. Then radiopaque isotonic solution or saline is introduced into the band via a port. The bariatric surgeon uses a specialized needle to avoid damage to the port membrane. If the adjustable gastric band post-surgical patient is thinking about having a baby, the deflation of the band may be required prior to the planned conception.

The gastric dumping syndrome problems cannot happen in lap band surgeries because none of the intestines are removed or re-routed. Calcium supplements and Vitamin B12 injections are not usually required following gastric banding as they are with Roux-en-y gastric bypass surgery and other weight loss surgeries. After surgery the patient should consider eating less, eating more slowly and chewing food more thoroughly. And during pregnancy, deflation should be considered if one is experiencing morning sickness. The lap band may remain deflated during pregnancy and once breast feeding or bottle-feeding is completed the band may gradually be re-inflated to help with postpartum weight loss if it’s found to be necessary.

Some patients may find that before their first ‘fill’ they are still able to eat fairly large portions of food. The World Health Organization recommendation for monthly weight loss is approximately 1.1 to 2.2 pounds per week and the average gastric banded patient may possibly lose this amount, it varies from patient to patient.

One post-surgical complication that is a common occurrence for lap band patients is regurgitation of non-acidic swallowed food from the upper pouch, which is commonly known as productive burping. This is not normal. Some mechanical malfunctions that can occur are leakage from the port, cracking of the kink-resistant tubing or disruption of the tubing connection from the port to the band, port site pain and displacement of the port.

Occasionally, the narrow passage into the lower part of the stomach may become blocked by a large portion of food that hasn’t been chewed. Some of the adjustable gastric band post-surgery digestive complications include nausea, vomiting, gastro-esophageal reflux, stoma obstruction, constipation, diarrhea, and abnormal stools.

Many factors can affect your total cost of the surgery, including which gastric or bariatric surgeon you decide on, where you choose to have the surgery performed, and what fees are included or not included. And please remember that lap band surgery or adjustable band surgery can have serious adverse effects and complications. Make sure if you’re traveling out of the country for your surgery that you consider the travel time and related travel expenses for both the surgery and any necessary follow-up appointments.

By: Helen Hecker

About the Author:

Overweight and obesity affects a large fraction of America’s population today. The disturbing increase of people who suffer from obesity prompted scientists and medical experts to formulate some remedy to help people who are suffering from serious health problems. A latest medical breakthrough certainly caught the attention and interest of a lot of Americans and people from any nations as well. Top US researchers came up with an obesity vaccine that could actually prevent excessive weight gain. This vaccine may sound too preposterous and too good to be true, but it is proving to be effective in experiments conducted to a laboratory mice. This makes us all hope that the said obesity vaccine will also perform effectively to humans.

Scientists have effectively identified a few hormones that are directly involved in a person’s appetite. The obesity vaccine would target the hormone known as ghrelin, which would cause the immune system to attack and break down the said hormone. Basically, ghrelin is our body’s defense against starvation and decreases the energy expenditure and burning of fatty tissues. So by tricking the immune system into attacking ghrelin, a person could effectively lose weight. The hormone ghrelin was discovered way back in 1999. This hormone is primarily responsible in gaining or losing weight and regulating appetite and body metabolism. . Ever since its discovery, medical expects have attempted to manipulate it to suit according to the human body’s needs.

The research team at Scripps Research Institute has found a way to trick the immune system into identifying the immune system as a foreign body. The human body’s immune system responded by attacking ghrelin as it would do to any bacteria introduced to the body. Hence, this resulted to the discovery of the obesity vaccine.

This is considered a very exciting therapeutic breakthrough since the obesity vaccine slows down the rate of weight gain while tolerating the person to eat normally. Likewise, the vaccine can potentially prevent or reduce the possibility of yo-yo dieting – the repetitive phase of weight loss and gain. When a person is on a certain diet, the body tends to produce ghrelin to deliberately slow down the metabolism and stimulate eating. These changes cause the body to retain and regain fat. This result to the frustrating cycle people often go through once they stop dieting.

However, in battling obesity people should not solely rely on this vaccine as the ultimate answer to weight reduction. Discipline, properly monitored food intake and regular exercise are the most reliable means of address both weight and health issues.

By: Milos Pesic

About the Author:

A study released in January 2008 by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota and the Minnesota Department of Health states that if obesity in Minnesota continues to rise it could cost the state an additional $900 million annually by 2010, and $3.7 billion more annually by 2020.

Minnesota ranks 25th in the nation for obesity according to another study, by the Trust for America’s Health (TFAH).

Minnesota’s adult obesity rate is 23.0 percent, and Minnesota has the 13th highest overweight levels for low-income children ages 2-5 at 13.2 percent. If obesity in Minnesota continues to rise it could cost the state an additional $900 million annually by 2010, and $3.7 billion more annually by 2020.

Nearly 119 million American adults, 65 percent of the population, are currently overweight or obese. The direct and indirect costs of obesity in America are more than $117 billion per year. “The added weight of the obesity epidemic to our already ailing health system is causing it to burst at the seams. Americans’ growing waistlines are leading to escalating disease rates and costs,” said Shelley A. Hearne, DrPH, Executive Director of TFAH. The study found that obesity and obesity-related disease rates are escalating throughout the nation; Minnesota is not out of the ordinary.

TFAH recommends that the impact of marketing and advertising on children’s diet and health be studied, and to investigate root causes and origins for unhealthy eating, physical activity, and obesity.

What can you do? Understand the influences on your diet, including fast food advertisements. The subconscious forces at work that result in eating too much and the wrong kinds of food can be eliminated through hypnosis. By reprogramming your subconscious mind you can change your actual behavior. Over-eating is a habit that has been learned over the years. As we all know, a habit is difficult to break on your own. Through the use of hypnosis, suggestions are given that will cancel out the negative habit. Once the negative habit has been removed, suggestions are then given that will start a new positive habit of eating the proper type and quantity of foods and liquids.

Awareness of the problem is the first step. Start a healthy program of proper eating and getting enough exercise for weight loss. But creating new habits is hard, and hypnosis can help you to enlist the power of your subconscious mind in making positive change. Hypnosis can actually eliminate the cravings you have for bad foods, and replace them with cravings for healthy foods. Hypnosis can actually make you DESIRE to exercise.

According to the Blue Cross study, 23 percent of Minnesotans fall into the obese category now, and if left unchecked that number will rise to 31 percent by 2020. Don’t let yourself be a statistic, start a program of healthy eating and exercise today, and don’t be afraid to get help from hypnosis!

By: Cindy Locher

About the Author:
