I was watching 60 Minutes last Sunday & saw the piece on Gastric Bypass. My mom is diabetic & matches all the other requirements for this surgery . How should she start. Like what is the first step? Find a doctor or should she be attending some class? I don’t even know how to help her?

First you need to call her insurance company and see if they cover it. Then you can ask them for a list of surgeons that they will pay for. You can also take her to her Regular doctor, and he can help. You need to basically just find a surgeon, and then they’ll get you going from there. Good luck.
1. Call insurance
2. Go to reg doc
3. look online for a surgeon in your area try asbs.org
I feel like gastric bypass should be used as a last resort…
depending upon your mom’s age. I think that a physician would be best to answer this though. I personally prefer going to DO’s vs. MD’s. These are doctors of osteopathic medicine. They do the same thing that MD’s do, but they are less likey to prescribe medicine and are more likely to try every avenue possible before doing things such as gastric bypass. They evaluate the patient as a whole rather than one symptom. Check it out…you can find them anywhere as you would find an MD. Good luck and I am wishing the best for your mom.
Yes, talk to the insurance company first, then get her doctor to make arrangements to see a specialist. You do realize that this is not a cure for her diabetes….it will just help her lose weight so she can control it better. Too many people have misunderstood the whole gastric bypass thing and think it is a cure. We had a big disscussion about it Monday at a diabetic ed. class I was at. It is also just for type 2 diabetics.
