Is it safe to have Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery?

   I am a nurse and have heard of many people having this done. Sometimes there are complications but the rate for serious harm as in death is minimal.

   They would have him on a low calorie intake for a week (have to lose a few kilos on that) before the surgery and then operate.

   The only problem with LGBS is that once done it cant be reversed. They keep shrinking the stomach until you lose the weight needed but you can never go back to eating normal.

   Usually they drink soups or eat a couple of mouthfuls of food and thats all they can fit in their stomach before they are full. Its a different way of life. I suggest your friend talk to someone who has had it done and lost weight to see how dramatically their life has changed with their eating habits. (If you eat too much, they say you vommit)

   Yes the weight loss is a blessing but does that benefit outweigh the loss of being able to eat a normal meal and fit comfortably in with a group of friends when you are socializing.

   Of course its not. This surgery is meant to be a last option for those who can’t lose weight any other way and whom may be at risk for death without intervention. I’ve seen, on tv, there are people who have died not from weight, but from this surgery. There are all types of side effects that you could look up, further researching the topic more deeply. What it comes down to is that each person’s body will react differently.

   I had the Lap Band Surgery in October. I have lost 50 lbs. I had concerns about the Gastric also. The Lap Band is a band that goes around your stomach. You lose weight at a slower rate and your insides are not rerouted. The food still goes through all your stomach. I added a website below that goes into detail about the surgery.

   I’d get a second opinion, there are better options. If your friend is morbid obese (50 to 100 lbs.) Then it’s better to lose weight first. Some doctor’s won’t do the surgery if that person is overweight.

   There is some danger.. not from the surgery but from the extended effects.. It is known to cause progressive hepatic problem.. My wife (of 20 years) had her details placed in the Canadian medical journal for being the last and longest living by pass partient on record.. She had this surgery in the mid 70′ and lasted until she was 47 years lof age.. The cirrhosis of the liver was complicated by hepatitis C.. which eventually was the actual cause of death. May consider stomach stapling in lieu of the bypass.

   I know 4 people who had the procedure. They all gained a substantial amount of weight back after a few years. Perhaps he might want to consider gastric banding, which is a much less invasive surgery and can be reversed.

   MY friend had a band fitted a few months ago. Last week she had tummy pain and was rushed into hospital. She’s had to have a huge part of her intestines removed, she nearly died, and is still critical.

   She also told me one of te other people who had the same operation, who managed to still gain weight because nothing would go down painlessly except ice cream!

   All operations are risky. It should only be a LAST RESORT, not an easy option!

   i don’t think its safe to have the surgery because what if something goes wrong and you die. it would be your fault and the doctor preforming the surgery. and your parents and kids ( if you have any) would miss you

    mostly good results…but if your friend is very overweight, it will entail further surgeries after healing from the bypass…Most people have to have extra skin removed surgically and other work by a plastic surgeon…also…your friend’s eating habits will change immediately.
