I’d never have gastric, not everyone has 6 months to take off from work. No, thank you. I’m 3 years out from the lap-band and I’m normal weight. It took me two years.

how can u really check on your doctor? I’m only going by recommendations. :(

By 9 days out most of the tenderness should be gone. It is not normal to hurt that much, but what is less normal is the swelling you described. I would be concerned about an infection. At the very least you should be seen by your doctor and it decided if antibiotics, opening incision, removing the port or just that nothing should be done.

MRSA is very common in hospitals. It can be transmitted by anyone (doctor, nurse, family member) that didnt wash their hands properly. I dont know what the lawsuit entails so I cant really say much more then that.

Someone I know had lap band surgery. It is not without risks.

The doctor is very well known and reccomended. He scheduled several patients the day of her surgery.

She waited at least 12 hours after her scheduled surgery.

    She ended up with MRSA.

After checking out this very popular doctor, he has had 5 lawsuits and settlements since 2000. Hers will be the 6th.

Check your dr out thoroughly before surgery.

I had the lapband in February 2008 and I’ve lost 40 lbs so far! You have to exercise. The fat is not going to just go away because u have the band. It just helps you not to overeat. U still have to work.

What the hell? I just lie on the “Flouroscope”, ex-ray machine thing and the nurse practitioner puts a needle in my stomach. A few seconds it’s over.

Before I get horrified that someone is sticking a needle in my guts it really is over.

Some people don’t see results until they’ve had 7 or ten fills. I’m surprised it’s taken so long for your doctor to check to see if there are any leaks, though. BE PROACTIVE WITH YOUR HEALTHCARE, and don’t give up on the band yet. Best of luck to you!

When I get mine filled the port hole is in my chest area. I have had no weightloss in the 18 months since having my operation. I am going for my 6TH band fill next week and a check to see if it is leeking or if I have problems with my port the following week. At the moment I want to have a full gastric bypass instead.

You are one of the lucky ones then. The fill vol that is the correct amount for 1 person maybe different for another. If someone is giving you a set volume at set times, you are being cheated. Also your experience seems to be N=1. I see hundreds of patients a month and fill patients from lots of other surgeons. Filling can be hard or difficult and the actual placement of the needle in the port is not the hard part of the fill.

There is no IV. Tubing that you see is part of the huber needle.

Wow, that sure is a lot of broo-ha-ha for a band fill. Mine take less than 5 seconds, and does not include an IV. From the people I know with the band, no one goes through all that.
It can miss, and it’s not painful.

Gotcha. “This is not painful when done correctly:” The words “big pinch” would seem to be at odds with that statement. ;-)

  19. By drrichd on Aug 7, 2009 | Reply

The needle used is a speical non-coring needle called a Huber needle. A regular needle will damage the port and cause it to leak. Depending on how deep the port is (based on fatty tissue) you can use between a 19 to 22 gauge needle. We use a spray anesthetic. 1 needle stick is better than 2. This is not painful when done correctly.

Is there an advantage to using “big needles” as described here, versus a regular gauge needle? Other videos on here show just a regular needle being used, no need for anesthetic… And someone on here mentioned that their dad actually gets an injectable anesthetic?

When done correctly, it is not painful.

The Lap Band is a device that provides mechanical restriction around the top portion of the stomach. This helps decrease the feelings of hunger/craving and allows a person to feel full faster. It is controlled via a fill/adjustment by placing saline into a port that is connected to the balloon in the Lap Band.

My dad gets a small needle to numb it before the big needle goes in, for the fill.
