The Lap Band is a device that provides mechanical restriction around the top portion of the stomach. This helps decrease the feelings of hunger/craving and allows a person to feel full faster. It is controlled via a fill/adjustment by placing saline into a port that is connected to the balloon in the Lap Band.

Is there an advantage to using "big needles" as described here, versus a regular gauge needle? Other videos on here show just a regular needle being used, no need for anesthetic... And someone on here mentioned that their dad actually gets an injectable anesthetic?

The needle used is a speical non-coring needle called a Huber needle. A regular needle will damage the port and cause it to leak. Depending on how deep the port is (based on fatty tissue) you can use between a 19 to 22 gauge needle. We use a spray anesthetic. 1 needle stick is better than 2. This is not painful when done correctly.

Gotcha. "This is not painful when done correctly:" The words "big pinch" would seem to be at odds with that statement. ;-)

Wow, that sure is a lot of broo-ha-ha for a band fill. Mine take less than 5 seconds, and does not include an IV. From the people I know with the band, no one goes through all that.
It can miss, and it's not painful.
